“You gave me a gift that keeps on giving—and you didn’t even know it,” my friend chatted to me on Facebook last night.

Tired and cranky, it was well past my bedtime and, like the past several evenings, I was glued to my computer and printer by a large project. Immediately, weariness and drudgery slithered out as life and delighted curiosity swooshed in.

What gift did I give that keeps on giving? I eagerly watched the little message icon as she typed on the other end of the country.

“My entire yard is filled with violas!”

Then I remembered.

Before she moved away, I gave her a little jar (empty hotel room shampoo container with a cute little bow on the neck) filled with seeds I’d saved from johnny jump ups that spring. After encouraging her to simply scatter them around her new home to remind her of her friends at “home,” I completely forgot about it.

So who got the greater gift? No contest, it was me.

Look at how this little guy smiles through the rocks of Arizona!

The King calls johnny jump ups “the flowers with the happy faces,” and he couldn’t be more right!

Receiving a gift is like getting a rare gemstone; any way you look at it, you see beauty refracted. Proverbs 17:8
