Just when you think you know everything about someone, you get a little surprise. Sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s not.

We were delighted to run into a friend from grade school days recently. In the midst of catching up on our lives, the King solicited, “Do you remember our sign?”

The friend kind of stepped back with a “Huh?” The King then demonstrated the hand sign, and there was a hint of disappointment that the friend did not immediately remember.

At home later, I asked what that was all about. And the King related how in about the 8th or 9th grade, he and the friend hung out for awhile. While they were in the same church youth group, they were not in the same school friends crowd and had different interests—the King was a jock, this guy wasn’t. But there was this period of time. They made up a hand sign, which others found difficult to emulate.

The friend had even written him a note which he kept for some time. Something along the lines of, “Thanks for being my friend and letting me hang out with you this year and be part of your group. It’s made me much more popular.”

The King chuckled and shook his head. “I didn’t think I was all that popular, myself!”

Funny, the things we remember. They’d see each other at opposite ends of the hall and give the sign. Other guys tried to do it, but couldn’t. Every few years it resurfaces in his memory, and he practices it again to see if he can still do it.

After 44 years, I love knowing he did that. I love that he remembers it fondly. I love discovering something new. I love reminders of what I saw in him all those many years ago.

And that about wraps it up. God is strong, and he wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we'll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels. Ephesians 6:10
