Someone has called me Grandma for 20 years, so it was a surprise to get this question.

Our youngest grandson lives far enough away that he doesn’t see us often. He’s being taught his family members’ names by looking at their pictures. I was informed of the three ways he says grandma and then asked which I would prefer he be taught.

Nice.

My grandmas were Grandma Last Name. Very normal. Some people have Grandma First Name. Seems odd to me.

I’ve always taken these things as they come — a que sera sera approach. Eldest granddaughter called me Mamam for awhile. Two middle granddaughters called me Grandma Cookie occasionally, because that’s what we did when they visited. Fun. But I secretly hoped for a unique grandma name.

My sister taught her grandkids to call her Bubby. Love it; makes her unique among grandmas. Others use variations of Nana, Grammy, etc. Not really me.

I do, however, possess a unique auntie name. One of my grandnieces couldn’t say Auntie Myrna, so it became Auntie Moola. She’s a teenager now, but to my delight, I’m still Auntie Moola (to her and her whole family).

So, since I was asked, and since it’s close to one of my three choices, I would like to be Grandma Moola. Or, simply, Moola.

And, as I told my daughter, you never know — it might be prophetic.

Listen with respect to the father who raised you, and when your mother grows old, don't neglect her. Buy truth—don't sell it for love or money; buy wisdom, buy education, buy insight. Parents rejoice when their children turn out well; wise children become proud parents. So make your father happy! Make your mother proud! Proverbs 23:22
